Emergency Care
Indiana Medicaid covers emergency care. You should never avoid the ER because you are worried about cost.
Emergency Care Is Always Covered
If you have a medical emergency, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. Indiana Medicaid covers emergency care at any hospital — even if it is not in your MCO’s network.
What Counts as an Emergency?
- Chest pain or trouble breathing
- Severe bleeding that will not stop
- Signs of a stroke (sudden numbness, confusion, trouble speaking)
- Serious injury from an accident
- Severe allergic reaction
- Loss of consciousness
- Thoughts of harming yourself or others
For Non-Emergencies — Avoid the ER
For things like a cold, minor earache, or rash, go to your primary care doctor or an urgent care clinic instead. Your MCO may also have a 24-hour nurse line — check your ID card.
After an ER Visit
Follow up with your primary care doctor after any ER visit. If you get a bill after your ER visit, call your MCO. You should not owe more than your standard co-pay (if any) for covered emergency services.
