Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Indiana Medicaid questions.
Is Indiana Medicaid free?
Most members pay little or nothing. HIP Plus members make a small monthly POWER account contribution — as low as $1/month for the lowest incomes. HIP Basic and Hoosier Healthwise for low-income families are generally free.
How long does it take to get approved?
FSSA has up to 45 days to decide most applications. If your case involves a disability determination, it may take up to 90 days. Respond quickly to any requests for more information to avoid delays.
Can I work and still have Medicaid?
Yes. HIP covers adults who work, as long as their income stays at or below 138% of the Federal Poverty Level. Report income changes to FSSA when they happen.
What if I am undocumented?
Most undocumented adults do not qualify for full Indiana Medicaid. However, emergency Medicaid covers emergency medical care regardless of immigration status. Pregnancy Medicaid is also available regardless of immigration status in Indiana.
What if I have other insurance?
You can still apply for Indiana Medicaid even if you have other coverage. Medicaid often acts as a secondary payer — it covers costs your primary insurance does not. Report any other insurance when you apply.
What is the difference between HIP and Hoosier Healthwise?
HIP (Healthy Indiana Plan) is for adults ages 19–64. Hoosier Healthwise is for children under 19, pregnant women, and some low-income families.
Can my child get coverage even if I do not qualify?
Yes. Children often qualify for Hoosier Healthwise at higher income levels than adults. Even if you do not qualify for HIP, your child may be eligible. Apply for them separately.
What happens if my income changes?
You must report income changes to FSSA. If your income goes above the limit, you may lose Medicaid — but you will have a Special Enrollment Period to get coverage through healthcare.gov. If your income drops, you may qualify for more benefits.
I lost my Medicaid card. What do I do?
Call your MCO directly to request a replacement card. You can also call FSSA at 800-403-0864 or print a temporary card through your MCO’s website.
